Calacatta Marble – Types, Uses & Where to Buy in Dubai

The most sought-after luxury marble in the world — and one of the most popular choices for Dubai villas, penthouses, and high-end apartments.

What Is Calacatta Marble?

Calacatta marble is a premium Italian marble quarried primarily in the Apuan Alps of Carrara, Tuscany. It is defined by its bright white background and distinctive bold, dramatic veining — typically in gold, warm grey, or a combination of both. Calacatta is often confused with Carrara marble, but the key differences are significant: Calacatta is whiter, has bolder and more dramatic veining, and is considerably rarer and more expensive.

In Dubai's interior design market, Calacatta marble is one of the most requested materials for high-end residential projects — used for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, marble coffee tables, dining tables, and flooring in villas, penthouses, and luxury apartments.

Types of Calacatta Marble

Several distinct varieties of Calacatta are commonly used in Dubai interiors:

Calacatta Gold (Calacatta Oro)

The most recognisable variety — pure white background with warm gold and grey veining. The gold veins give it a luxurious, warm quality that reads well in both natural and artificial light. Calacatta Gold (also called Calacatta Oro) is the most popular choice for kitchen islands and marble dining tables in Dubai villas.

Calacatta Borghini

Considered one of the most precious Calacatta varieties. Features an ultra-bright white background with fine, intense grey-gold veining. Very rare — typically reserved for statement surfaces in the highest-end projects.

Calacatta Viola

A distinctive variety with purple-tinged veining on white. Less common than Gold but increasingly sought-after for feature walls and bathroom applications in contemporary interiors.

Calacatta Lincoln

A commercial-grade Calacatta with a white background and softer, more diffuse grey veining. More accessible in price than Gold or Borghini, but still a premium material for flooring and countertops.

Calacatta Marble Uses in Dubai Interiors

In Dubai's residential market, Calacatta marble appears most frequently in the following applications:

  • Kitchen countertops and islands — the most common application. A Calacatta marble kitchen island is one of the defining features of a luxury Dubai kitchen.
  • Bathroom vanity tops and wall cladding — Calacatta in a bathroom creates an immediate sense of luxury. Often used floor-to-ceiling in master bathroom wet rooms.
  • Marble coffee tables and dining tables — custom marble furniture made with Calacatta slabs is increasingly popular as an alternative to buying imported pieces.
  • Flooring — used in entrance halls, master bedrooms, and feature rooms. Large-format Calacatta slabs with matched veining create a dramatic, seamless floor.
  • Feature walls and fireplace surrounds — a Calacatta marble feature wall or fireplace surround is one of the most impactful design moves in a living room.

Calacatta vs Carrara Marble — What's the Difference?

Both come from the same region of Italy, but they are different materials with different price points:

  • Colour: Calacatta is brighter white; Carrara has a warmer, slightly grey-white background.
  • Veining: Calacatta has bold, dramatic veins; Carrara's veining is finer and more subtle.
  • Rarity: Calacatta is quarried in much smaller quantities, making it considerably more expensive.
  • Use case: Calacatta for statement surfaces and feature pieces; Carrara for more extensive surface coverage where budget is a consideration.

Buying and Using Calacatta Marble in Dubai

Calacatta marble is widely available in Dubai through marble suppliers in Al Quoz and Deira. If you are sourcing Calacatta for a specific project — furniture, countertops, or flooring — it is important to view the actual slabs before purchasing, as every slab is unique and the veining pattern varies significantly.

At Renovel, we source Calacatta marble slabs for furniture and interior projects and present options to clients for approval before any cutting begins. This ensures the veining on your finished piece matches your expectations — particularly important for dining tables and countertops where the slab is prominently visible.
